EYA – Experiencing and conveying the emotions of the “Terre Alte” (high lands)

Area Vasta Valgrigna, BIENNO, Brescia, Lombardia, ITALIA

15 lug → 25 lug (11 giorni · 10 notti)

A mountain field camp dedicated to the exploration and discovery of the natural, agricultural, and cultural potential of the Area Vasta Valgrigna in the Lombard Prealps. Its purpose is to give voice to the participants’ lived experiences — their sensations and emotions — transforming them into stories and ideas for the promotion of the territory and encouraging a mindful and sustainable mountain hiking and fostering the protection and enhancement of alpine pastures.

Il Progetto

The purpose of the camp is to live and share the emotions of the TERRE ALTE (high lands)— to immerse oneself in a world of resilience, authenticity, and deep connection with nature within the context of the Area Vasta Valgrigna. These are experiences that contrast with the hectic pace of everyday life, allowing participants to rediscover essential values, to draw lessons from hardship, and appreciate the raw, sincere beauty of landscapes and mountain communities, transforming challenges and intense moments into authentic life stories and ideas for territorial animation.

The project, carried out in collaboration with the Bio-distretto di Valle Camonica, is co-funded through the 2025 “8 per mille” grant of the Waldensian Church.

The camp’s logistical base will be the Malga Silter refuge in Campolungo, situated at 1,490 meters, reachable on foot in about an hour and a half from Campolaro (Bienno, BS), where participants will be transported by car.

The facility will be self-managed, with participants responsible for daily tasks such as meal preparation and cleaning, and they will be accommodated in shared rooms.

A program of hikes will allow participants to discover alpine pastures and areas of particular natural interest. During some activities, they will be accompanied by experts (geologist, botanist, and forestry engineer), who will help highlight important elements and support the documentation and reporting process.

At certain alpine pastures, participants will have the opportunity to engage with the work of local shepherds, assisting with livestock care, cheesemaking, and the functioning of the facility (e.g., firewood collection). Maintenance work on structures or trails may also be planned.

On the arrival evening (July 15) and the last two evenings (July 24 and 25), participants will be hosted in the valley floor (Darfo Boario Terme – BS) . The rest day is scheduled for July 25.

"*This camp is a part of the project "European Youth in Action: policymakers for climate justice", co-funded by the Citizens, Equality. Rights and Values (CERV) programme of the European Commission."

Attività principali

The core activity involves observing and capturing, during the hikes, the landscapes, natural features, human traces, and cultural elements, along with the emotions and sensations they inspire. Participants will translate these experiences into written reflections and photographic or video documentation, which will then be woven together into a summary that will serve as a source of inspiration for territorial animation projects.

At three different alpine pastures, participants will have the opportunity to engage with the work of local shepherds, assisting with livestock care, cheesemaking, and the functioning of the facility (e.g., firewood collection). Maintenance work on structures or trails may also be planned.

Requisiti

As the field camp is part of a broader project linked to the Alpine context, participants must come exclusively from countries within the Alpine arc (France, Switzerland, Austria, Germany, Italy).

Given that the activities involve itinerant mountain routes between 1,500 and 2,000 meters above sea level, participants are required to have a level of physical fitness that allows them to walk for several hours on mountain trails, with average daily elevation gains of around 500–600 meters. They must also be equipped with mountain backpack and appropriate clothing, including hiking waterproof boots, a waterproof jacket, and warm garments and al least a complete change of clothes including shoes.

They will also need to bring a warm sleeping bag, fitted sheet ( 90 cm) and a pillow case.
